Welcome to part 3 of the IM Impact/100K Blueprint Adsense Challenge! So far, we’ve done the keyword research, set up a site and added some content. We’ve also made sure that Google finds our new AdSense site and done some initial link-building.
Now, it’s time to ramp up our link-building efforts and in today’s update, we’ll also start diversifying just a little bit. More details below.
Before we get to the next set of tasks, here’s one more thing I have not mentioned, so far: adding the actual AdSense ad-blocks to your site. I’m simply assuming that you’ve already done that.
You can do that pretty much immediately, once the site is up and running and has it’s first piece of content on it. In order to get the best CTR on the ads, two things are advisable:
- Make the ads blend into the rest of your site’s design. They should not stick out like a sore thumb, but rather seamlessly integrate with the content of your blog (i.e. match the background- and text colors of the ads with those of your site/theme).
- Choose to display text-ads only. Image ads look too much like ads and most people don’t like clicking on ads. Also, the click prices (and therefore your earnings) tend to be lower for image ads.
Here’s a nice collection of AdSense optimized WordPress themes, that fit perfectly for the above criteria.
Alright, now on to the tasks…
1 Spread the Link Love.
The first task is to make sure that every page on your site gets at least one backlink from somewhere. This is just to give Google a little signal that says “hey, all of the pages on this site are at least somewhat important”. The idea is not to get all the pages ranked, but to increase the percieved importance of the entire site. Don’t spend too much time on this one. Drop a few bookmarks or a few profile links and you’re good.
2 Start a Ritual.
Your next task is to start a daily link-building ritual for your first target page (i.e. the first page you want to get ranked, as picked in the second part of the challenge). If you own any link-building tools or are subscribed to any services, incorporate those. For example, a link-building ritual could be: submit two posts to BuildMyRank and submit one article to ArticleRanks.
Do this same ritual every day. For now, build all the links for just that one page. There will be an update to this in the next step.
You can keep the ritual short. The key here is to do it consistently. It’s this daily grind that will get you top results.
3 Get a Second Keyword Group.
The final task is to go back and do some more keyword research to find a second keyword group. For now, all you need is another keyword group as a “backup”. You never know how things will turn out with the first site you’re working on. Might work out great, might be more difficult or less profitable than expected. Ultimately, you want to have a portfolio of many different sites, so that it’s no big loss if one of them is taking longer to rank or drops out of the top spots for some reason. With finding a second keyword group that we could potentiall build a site around, we’re taking the first step towards this goal.
Let me know how things are going for you, so far!
